The critical distinction between the technical potential to improve fuel economy and how much of that technical potential is realized .. Summary The Global Fuel Economy Initiative was launched in early 2009. It set a target of improving the average fuel economy (in litre/100km terms) for the global vehicle light-duty vehicle fleet by at least 50% by 2050 (50by50). In terms of miles per gallon this would be a doubling of performance. This level of improvement is envisaged to be feasible using ―existing, cost-effective incremental fuel economy technologies.‖ The purpose of this report is to assess the progress being made in reaching this goal and the prospects for reaching the goal in the light of ongoing research and other developments that have occurred the past year or so.
